A new study commissioned by the National Black Justice Coalition (NBJC) has found 65% of Black people in the United States are “supporters of Black LGBTQ+ people and rights,” including 57% of regular churchgoers and 71% of Gen Z. But the study also found significantly lower support for Black transgender and nonbinary people in particular, and identified strategies for increasing support among those who are still ambivalent.
The Black Facts study, which NBJC said it believes to be “one of the first of its kind” in a press release Wednesday, was performed by public opinion research firm HIT Strategies with additional support from nonprofit groups Family Equality, GLSEN, the Human Rights Campaign, LGBTQ Task Force, and the National Center for Lesbian Rights. Researchers surveyed 1,300 Black registered voters of varying ages from across the U.S. in order “to seek explicitly to gauge attitudes among Black people on Black LGBTQ+ people and issues.” The survey also intentionally oversampled Black LGBTQ+ people, who made up 10% of the total cohort, to “provide a more representative view of this subgroup” than has been found in previous LGBTQ+ research.
“Knowing how important it is for us to turn down the white noise and reclaim African ways of being, we commissioned groundbreaking research to ensure we’re talking about Black people, their feelings about and support for Black LGBTQ+ people, and the policy issues that most impact us all,” NBJC representatives wrote in the overview to the report.
